Jenny Smith

Jennifer Leigh Smith, J.D. grew up on a sustainable farm in Louisiana playing in the woods and bayous, marveling at the nature all around her. “Tree Jenny” (as the kids participating in Association Community Carbon Trees (ACCT) education programs named her), is a Lawyer, Agro-forester and Certified Carbon Auditor. She is a dedicated Yoguini having practiced yoga for over 30 years.

Jenny is a revolutionary tree activist who champions fair pay for tree planters around the world, especially near the equator where trees generously give us compounded benefits. The ACCT community reforestation programs empower vulnerable families by including women in the center of the work, in both Central America and Kenya, Africa. Jenny and her teams have produced, planted and maintained long term, more than 606,000 biodiverse trees, over 100 different native fruit, lumber and animal fodder species.

Jenny holds space for activists and businesses around the world to give back to Mother Earth by encouraging global participation in sponsoring ONE TREE AT A TIME. The ACCT movement invites people from all walks of life to connect with their childlike wonder and joy in Nature and participate in a powerful regenerative natural solution for global environmental challenges.

What we do to the Earth we do to ourselves… re-wilding our inner and outer world is a joyful way to further our own joyful purpose in life and use it to live in real harmony with Ourselves as an integrated part of Nature.

Since working with Nathan I have stepped into my power and gotten to know myself through movement. I feel words don’t do an experience with Nathan justice! I’m excited to continue working with Nathan and exploring myself and the world through movement.

- Danielle Lee Hogervorst

A friend I invited to one of Nathan’s dance performances and wrote me a note after saying that she came away with her hope for the future of humanity restored.

- Mary Sophia Winslow

It’s so much more than dance. Nathan holds an extremely open and beautiful space, while being able to tap in and guide you through exactly what you are needing in the moment. I leave every session feeling more expanded than the last!

- Olivia Anderson

I have worked with Jenny for almost 18 years with our women’s group in Costa Rica. I most enjoy it when Jenny brings groups of people to the ACCT community tree nursery at our house for medicinal plant walks. Jenny has such a keen knowledge of medicinal plants and trees that we are constantly discovering new remedies and layers of plant wisdom together. It’s so fun to see Jenny get a group excited about a bug or a flower, simply from her own joy and wonder in admiring the nature around her. Jenny sees the details that most of us miss. Plus, she explains the bigger picture with simple language and examples of how the rainforest is interacting with all of us every single day no matter where we live.
- Teresa Badilla Zamora

I first met Jenny while she was doing a walk and talk about medicinals and native plants in Costa Rica. Her intimate knowledge of the forest and her positive energy inspired me to chase her down and ask if I could help out in some way. I am so glad I did! From learning how to replant seedlings to growing new trees, to meeting her workers in the mountains up close and really getting a feel for the jungle, I felt a sense of purpose that had been lacking for me for some time.

Jenny’s mission seemed very clear right from the start, and the more I got to know her, the more I saw that she really lives what she talks about, she has dedicated her life to doing real work, the often frustrating, messy and hard tasks in service of our planet. Tree Jenny has a unique way of understanding and explaining carbon capture, and why this can actually work, to any audience, from kids to executives, and she somehow stays bright in the face of great odds. I took away with me the idea that it’s never too late, that I can refocus my life on my own timeline and that I get to choose where my boots will walk and what I will leave behind. I really needed that inspiration, and I hope someday I can pass it on to someone else.

- Colleen Costello

Simply put, Jenny Smith is a force of nature! She is a remarkable mix of fire earth water and air joined with sharp intellect, vision, tenacity and heart. All of this fuel is so unique and inspiring to see in her work at Community Carbon Trees in Costa Rica! However, with Jenny, it’s never all work, as her heart includes a big dose of childlike wonder, spontaneity and sense of play which is contagious!!

When I first started hosting groups at Solfeggio Sanctuary, I knew every group must experience the rainforest through Jenny’s eyes. It’s been nothing short of profound for all who have walked the forest floor under the towering canopy Trees with this woman, who downloads a depth of wisdom.

I always say you really don’t know where you are until you stand in front of the giant Ceiba tree in the sanctuary forest. With Jenny as your guide, your roots will grow deeper and your crown will expand up and beyond to perceive your connection to all life on this precious living breathing planet! And that moment there will be no mistaking that this is an experience of a lifetime and quite possibly life altering.
